He is still a chance to turn out in London, with Fiji's final line-up to be named on Friday.

After quitting NFL franchise the San Francisco 49ers this week, the former NRL star announced his intention to qualify for the Olympics with the Rugby Sevens' gold-medal favourites.

But after going into camp with the team on Monday, the cross-code star missed out on the initial 12-man squad named on Wednesday by coach Ben Ryan.

Hayne ended his much-publicised NFL career earlier in the week, setting his sights on Rio.

"I simply could not pass that chance up," Hayne said on Monday (AEST).

"The Olympics has been something I have admired since I was a little boy, and it is an opportunity I feel very similar to me joining the NFL."

Fiji Rugby later posted an image to its Facebook page of Hayne in his training kit.
