The veteran defender said he can't begin to thank the people who gave him a new status in the realms of the Fijian sporting fraternity.

"There are way too many people to thank, but the fans obviously who voted me certainly deserves the most praise", he said.

"My family for all the support and the blessings over the years as without them I wouldn't have been where I'm today".

Having already won the Inter District Championship and FANCA earlier, Irshaad capped off what has turned out to be the year after pipping football exponent and Nadi FC teammate Javid Khan on votes to win the 2016 Sportsone Sportsman of the Year Award.

"Some start to 2017. I'm flabbergasted to be mentioned in the same breath with some of the best athletes that have won the award before me. It is quite enthralling".

Irshaad also thanked S1 media group for being the hosts of the award and his teammates from Nadi FC and FANCA, with whom he won the double titles in 2016.

"Thank you Sportsone. Thanks to the teammates who I have had a chance to play with last year and get shortlisted for the award".
