Embarrassing start

Opinions / Analysis

AS Tefana humiliated Fiji champions Nadi FC 6-1 in the opening match of the 2016 Oceania Champions League in New Zealand on Friday.

The Tahitian's completely schooled Nadi at their own game.

AS Tefana’s tactical dominance have many believe that Nadi had picked up the very game plan they had left off during the 2014 OFC campaign.

The lack of vitality and strength on display evidently backup the claim.

The embarrassment must be shouldered by the Nadi Football Association head honcho, president Navneeda Goundar, who opened up his big 'pie' hole ahead of the high energy churning competition that local players will do just fine versus import players.

He also made bad on a promise that they had learnt a valuable lesson at the conclusion of the 2014 competitions and reaffirmed that should opportunity beckons NFA will put-together a competitive team, the false pledge of the ownership fooled the fervent fans and neutrals.

The drubbing serves the district good that a tournament of OFC magnitude is not for faint hearts and disjointed sides, the stage is so reserved for Oceania regions' best two teams.

The top two men in all essence failed to sponge in the positives from the 2014 outing to form a competitive team.

Had they got down to serious business of refurbishing the team after winning the National Football League in the way of retaining the departed and or using the March transfer window to sign marquees, this day wouldn't have befallen them.

It is easy to point out the fingers at the partial FFA and the wave of bad weather, but the fact remains that it is the responsibility of the said, to be at the top of their administrative forth regardless of the situation at hand.

And while the 2014 run ended with a string of losses in that Nadi FC were beaten 0-3 by Auckland City, 0-6 to Amicale and 0-5 by AS Dradon from Tahiti, the 2016 is already shaping out to be a repeat.

Samuel Drudru, who has changed codes, was red carded in the first match in the opening game back then and this time around Iliomotama Jese repeated the feat.

With the half- dozen goals, the star spiked opponents have practically written early history with its masterclass performance on match day one of the competitions.

Goundar's post game comment could only be summed up as laughable.

He needs to be mindful of fact that football in Fiji has evolved over the years and game has become a professional sport and it’s no different at the OFC competitions.

The lime churning, Goundar should quit on the usual complaining and look to the future.
