Bolaitoga, Mateinaqara shine for Hekari Utd

Fiji Sports

Fijian international Pita Bolaitoga Fijian international Pita Bolaitoga Fijian connection Pita Bolaitoga and Benaminio Mateinaqara bolster Hekari United to a flying start to their Fiji Airways Oceania Champions League as they beat Vanuatu's Tafea FC 3-2 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

The Group C opener was a repeat of last year when Tafea ousted Hekari 2-1 but this was not to be.

Fijians Pita Bolaitoga and Benaminio Mateinaqara played outstanding, the latter perhaps the reason Tafea did not win the match.

The match started with fireworks as Hekari striker Dennis Ifunaoa scored the fastest goal of the tournament, within a minute.

Tommy Semmy cut the ball across the face of the goal from the left flank.

Tafea defenders missed the ball as it rolled to Ifunaoa on the edge of the box for a left foot drive into the goal.

Semmy who was the supplier in the first goal, scored the second in the 11th minute as he raced from the right flank untouched to smash the ball past the goalkeeper.

Hekari led 2-0 at break and it was them who had the first say in the 54th minute as an unselfish midfielder Joachim Waroi played the ball across the face of the goal for an arriving Alick Maemae to finish at the back post.

The game was not structured as both teams time and time again opted for long passes with probability of it reaching the target almost halved.

Jean Kaltack pulled two back for Tafea but the goals were not enough.

Hekari had the opportunity to have gone at least three more goals up with players missing on one on one situations.

Hekari coach Terry Allen was a happy man after the win.

"This is what we wanted.

"The boys played the game very well.

"Benaminio was very good, he made some very excellent saves," he said.

Tafea coach Mois Poida said luck was not on their side.

"We came we played but did not have that many chances to score. Hekari took their chances.

"This game is over and now we focus on the next one," he said.

Hekari will face Wellington on Wednesday while Tafea takes on Tefana.
