Fiji vs USAFiji vs USAThe Vodafone Flying Fijians overcame a tough USA challenge to win the first cup quarterfinal of the 2016 Vancouver 7s in scintillating fashion.

The match concluded 31-26 in favor of Fiji after extra time.

Martin Iosefo and Ben Pinkleman had scored two quick tries to hand USA a 12-0 lead early in the first half. Savenaca Rawaca’s unconverted try reduced the deficit to 5-12. Garret Bender then crossed over for another converted US try taking the score to 19-5 at halftime.

Impressive Kitione Taliga and Captain Osea Kolinisau touched down on the other side of the break to tie the match 19-19. However, sevens rugby’s fastest man Perry Baker put USA back in front outpacing the Fijian defense with style. Madison Hughes converted the try to take USA’s lead to 26-19.

With the match hanging on a knife-edge, hardworking forward Jasa Veremalua stepped up to score another try for Fiji. Osea’s conversion from the sideline levelled the tally 26-26. This scoreline remained intact till full time.

The tension could be felt throughout the stadium as both teams took to the field for the all or nothing sudden death extra time.

The Fijian crowd roared their hearts out when Sevuloni Mocenacagi ripped the USA defense apart, offloaded to Kitione Taliga who set up the “pine truck” Savenaca Rawaca for the match winning try.

“You have to be here at BC Place to feel what we felt during that quarterfinal” were the words of Irshaad Mohammed, a Surrey BC resident of Fijian decent. “I’m ecstatic, lost for words”. “That was a heart-throbbing match” he added.

Fiji now meets South Africa in the first cup semifinal who defeated Wales 31-0 in the second cup quarterfinal. New Zealand beat Samoa 17-12 in the third cup quarterfinal setting up a semifinal clash with Trans-Tasman rivals Australia who dismissed Scotland 24-17 in the last cup quarters.
