Canada beat the United States 26-19 to win the Singapore Sevens title on Sunday in a first ever all-American final of a World Sevens series event.
The Canadians claimed their first World Sevens title after 140 World Sevens Series event.
Canada ran four tries to three victory in a thrilling game over their North American neighbors, who were chasing their second tournament success after winning at London in 2015.
In an extraordinary day of upset results, Canada earned their way into the final the hard way, beating New Zealand 26-14 in the quarter-finals then England 17-5 in the semis.
The US also upset rugby's established powerhouses by beating Olympic champions Fiji 24-19 in the quarters and then Australia 40-7 in the semis.
Canada raced to a 19-0 lead in the final but lost their way as the US drew level at 19-19 before Lucas Hammond darted through a hole and scored the winning try with less than two minutes left.
Coach Damian McGrath, who coached Samoa to a shock win at the HSBC Paris Sevens last year, added: "It's incredible. Last night (on day one) we were beaten by Fiji so we had a little bit of soul searching and then we came back and beat some of the best teams in the world. This will show that Canadian rugby has so much to offer."
HSBC Player of the Final Nathan Hirayama said after the historic match, "It's an unbelievable feeling. A lot of us have been on the scene a long time and we came through some dark times, but to come away with that win was special."
Captain John Moonlight said afterwards: “It’s hard to put that into words. We took a licking against Fiji yesterday, and from our coach. But we showed up today, we showed the world we can beat anyone. We beat three of the best teams today. We are flying. An unbelievable feeling.”
England finished third, beating Australia in the bronze medal match.
