Chelsea Hero Didier DrogbaChelsea Hero Didier DrogbaDidier Drogba and Petr Cech combined on a dramatic night to give Roman Abramovich the Champions League trophy he has craved for almost a decade.

Drogba scored the penalty that secured a shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in their own back yard – having netted an 88th-minute equaliser to keep the Blues in the hunt.

But keeper Cech played his part too, saving an extra-time penalty from former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben – conceded by Drogba – then denying Ivica Olic in the shoot-out. Drogba is expected to leave Chelsea on a free transfer this summer, despite being offered a two-year contract to stay.

And midfielder Frank Lampard said: “He’s a hero. Without him, we wouldn’t have got here. He scored the goals in the big games.

“There’s a great spirit here, and Drogba has done it on the big stage for us”, said Lampard.

“I would love him to stay, but it’s his decision. I can’t believe we’ve done it. The turnaround we’ve had since mid-season has been tremendous.

“There’s a great spirit here, and Drogba has done it on the big stage for us again.”

Thomas Muller looked to have made Bayern champions of Europe for the fifth time when he gave them the lead with an 83rd-minute header. But Drogba had other ideas, and strengthened Roberto Di matteo’s chances of getting the manager’s job on a full-time basis.

Former England coach Fabio Capello has been linked with the job but he has moved to distance himself from Chelsea, insisting there has been no official contact from Stamford Bridge.
