Two records were set in the inaugural Sports1 sponsored Canada Day Celebrations sports fishing competition in Campbell River last weekend.
Vancouver angler Bobby Izaz Mohammed took out the highest catch award while Surrey’s Subarmani Reddy was the biggest catch recipient.
Reddy’s, Halibut tipped the scale at 100 pounds.
“I have fished the same stretch of water for years and when the venue was announced I knew where to hit.” said Reddy.
He said he had dispatched a heavier tackle to troll the lures over a 500 feet depth for his prize catch.
“It’s quite the feeling to out fish the best of the community”.
Mohammed shuffled his catch in four hours to beat ten other competitors.
Sports1 competitions manager Paul Chand said the two day event was a huge success.
“This is one of many planned events. We are glad to be a part of this, and we will continue to sponsor the Canada Day Celebrations (CDC) sports fishing event”, Paul said.
“Anglers Bobby Izaz (Mohammed) and Reddy (Subarmani) scored big. They ran into large schools of Halibut and Rock Cord that had followed migration into coastal waters”.
Mohammed said he will try to better his own record in the next event.
“I’m proud of my achievement,” said Mohammed.
The competitors braved high swells but otherwise ideal weather conditions to fish.
Reginald Sidal scooped the rookie angler award.
The winners also received a $250 fishing gift voucher to go with their prizes.
