New Zealand 7s captain DJ ForbesNew Zealand 7s captain DJ ForbesNew Zealand have lost inspirational captain DJ Forbes to injury ahead of this weekend's Las Vegas Sevens tournament in the United States.

Forbes was injured during New Zealand's crucial home tournament win in Wellington last weekend, a result that kept them in touch with world series leaders South Africa.

Forbes sustained a mid-foot sprain and avulsion fracture to his left foot during the team's quarterfinal win against Australia on Saturday.

New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens has called in veteran Lote Raikabula to replace Forbes for the American leg of the circuit and confirmed that Scott Curry will take over as captain.

The 31-year-old Raikabula has played more than 60 World Series tournaments since making his debut in 2006 and has scored more than 100 tries.

A rejuvenated New Zealand team are looking to take their much-needed momentum to the United States following a strong showing at home.

New Zealand have a tough pool in Las Vegas, drawing Fiji, Wales and Samoa.

New Zealand, defending world series champions, are in second place after four of the nine tournaments.

South Africa lead the series with 76 points to New Zealand's 69.
