FORMER Lautoka and Fiji national football team striker Epeli Ragavatu Kosa passed away in Auckland, New Zealand today.
He was 65.
Kosa rose to stardom in the 1980s.
He was a part of the district’s all conquering 1984-1986 team that won the back- to- back 1984-1985, Inter District championships, the 1985 Battle of the Giants and the 1988 National Football League championship.
A true champion, who was born and raised in Tavakubu, Lautoka.
Kosa’s footballing career started during pickup games, and kicked it up to next level while attending Lautoka Muslim High School in 1975.
Affably known as ‘disco’ for uncanny skills and movements, he was called into district’s Colt team in 1977, before making his full premiere debut in 1979.
And for the next decade, he represented the district with distinction.
Kosa also represented the country between 1983-1986, with the country's cream of the crop.
And before his relocation to New Zealand on a football contract, he was on the team that won the 1988 National Football League.
He had a colourful football career with Papatoetoe FC, Manurewa FC, Mangere United, Lautoka premier and Lautoka Masters.
Longtime friend and ex- Lautoka team-mate, Sam Lal said Kosa didn't have a bad bone in him, adding he was humble and down to earth person.
"He was a complete footballer, very skillful, who was a game changer. Lautokan's of the 70s-90s, know of his footballing abilities."
"We played on the same Leeds United Club and the district, while he was a senior and at a different level, he was no different, he treated everyone around him with the same level of respect if not more".
Lal said Lautoka football has lost a legend, who would be remembered.
"Kosa will be remembered in the annals of Lautoka, Fiji and New Zealand football".
Kosa's funeral will be on Wednesday in Auckland, New Zealand.
