Nur Mohammed was among the guests to Nirmal Singh and Sameeta Gill’s nuptials in Edmonton last weekend.

Unbeknown to Mohammed, the father of the groom, Jagat Singh who the Mohammed’s are lifelong family friends with had other plans.

Mohammed was bestowed with Jagat’s elder brother’s role which he accepted with a sense of joy.

Introduced during the 'milnee' (welcome) ceremony at the Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabah (where Sikhs come together for congregational worship), his family were left to awe the hosts respect.

“I have always been Jagat’s older brother, this is how we grew up,” said Mohammed.

“Brothers by heart and out of love.

“I wasn’t aware of the role that awaited, honestly when I was called upon, I gladly stepped into the role.”

In the Sikh wedding, it is customary that immediate family members, father, brothers and uncles from the bride and groom’s side meet before the religious ceremonies are conducted.

Mohammed has been to many weddings in Vancouver, the Sikh wedding he said was his first, very glamorous and one that he will forever remember.

“Respect in no small measure.”

Jagat said he was honoured to have Mohammed be a part of the milnee’ during his elder son’s wedding.

“How often do you hear someone other than your own to be a part of the wedding ceremony in a  grand way, unless you’re a Nasauan,” he jested.

Nasau is a small settlement on the outskirts of Nadi Town, and some 25 minutes drive from the Nadi Airport.

It is where the Mohammed’s and the Singh’s are originally from, who have always shared a common brotherly relationship.

“We take care of our own, we see no different and we do it like nobody,” said Jagat.

The weekend long cultural and traditional celebrations were well planned, the outfits, music and the decorations all accentuated with the religious and cultural theme.

For food and drinks? there isn’t a party like it.

And with a champagne toast, the couple pledged their lifelong commitment, as family and friends celebrated the joyous occasion.
