A MAJORITY of Albertans are likely to take a pass at this year’s HSBC SVNS Canada Sevens.
Edmontonian and Calgarians feel Fiji men’s 7s Perth Sevens performance have them hold back on traveling to Vancouver.
The Albertans backed up raucous Vancouver fans to bring the rafters down at the BC.Place Stadium in the past.
“We Albertans are huge Fiji sevens supporters, always have been but it’s best we take a pass on this year’s Canada Sevens,” said Ajay Nand.
Nand has been a member of a strong 15 member ‘wild rose group’ that has never missed an event since the inaugural tournament in 2016.
Missing out on the 2025 tournament doesn’t make the Albertans any less Fiji sevens fans, the understanding is the team isn’t playing well lately and the trip to Canada Sevens is unworthy.
“Fiji won the HSBC SVNS Dubai Sevens leg and since then have lost the crux.
“We get beat by Uruguay, not that Uruguayans don’t come to compete but sevens is Fiji’s game, always been one.”
Jason Wale, a Kenyan who is in love with Fiji sevens rugby, says while Fijians are uncertain about their travel plans to Vancouver and or holding out, he will be among the thousands to support the team.
Wale’s loyalty to Fiji is by the virtue of marriage.
“My wife is Fijian, who loves the sport, and it is only fair that I support her and love the team.
“Happy wife, happy life, now my loyalty is to Fiji,” he laughs.
Wale isn’t alone, he’s coming with a few Kenyan converts who all fall for Fiji team, its rugby and the party atmosphere at the BC.Place.
“Toso Viti Toso’, hey I got that right.”
