FOOTBALL runs deep in the Sahib’s veins.
For the listed district diehards, money can’t buy them in Fiji.
Zibraaz Sahib, a Lautoka legend is the last of the Sahib’s still active at the district level.
The Blues mainstay took an exception on loyalty and as a guest player, he represented Edmonton Ba in the Battle of the Giants.
Inspired by family
The third-generation footballer was inspired to continue the family tradition.
Zibraaz’s father Hanif ‘Hippo’, Sahib represented the district in the ’70s, and in the year 2000, brothers Poly Alfraaz and Robert Sahib followed in his footsteps.
The duo’s relocation to New Zealand has them play the veterans game.
Issiah steps in
And while Zibraaz’s illustrious career is drawing to an end, steps in the game his grandson, Issiah Sahib, who would’ve loved to play for the roots, but like grandfather took a pass to drape in the green attire and represented the championship-winning Nadi FC.
“Felt good to play against an upcoming player,” said Zibraaz.
Tradition continues
Issiah’s grandfather, Mohammed Hanif Sahib and Zibraaz Sahib are first cousins, and for the two to share the pitch was a joyous occasion.
Third meeting
It was a third meeting for them, they were up against each other in the FANCA Muslim tournament in 2022 in Nadi and again in 2024 in Lautoka, Fiji.
Losing 3-0 in 2022, and scoring an upset 4-2 win in the semifinal in 2024.
Sweet victory
And the sweetest of all for Isaiah was the 2-1 semifinal win against Edmonton Ba, in which Zibraaz missed a penalty.
“Happy to have come on top by winning the game,” said Issiah.
Both teams tied 1-1 in the pool game.
“Sharing the pitch with a legend was a great honour.”
Lautoka invite
Zibraaz has invited Issiah to come train with him in Fiji and get the feel of district football.
Issiah is planning on going to Fiji in August for 3- weeks.
“It’s an invite I can’t turn down,” said Issiah.
He scored a brace in Nadi’s 6-2 BOG final against Labasa last Sunday.
