Retiree earns cash on recyclables

SAVITA is retired but there’s little prospect that she will ever be able to stop working.

She says she finds her walks as work, as she collects recyclables in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey to earn extra cash.

“I have been doing it for some time now,” she said.

One would take her for an Indo-Punjabi, but after a brief conversation, she admitted she was from Ba, Fiji.

“I’m from Ba, I have lived here for a long time, I keep myself occupied by collecting recycling plastics, pop cans and juice boxes,” said Savita.

“I have regular pickups, those odds and some on the go, every item is worth the walk.

“It helps earn some cash, and I get to put in steps to keep healthy.”

Savita lived with her grandson Benjamin up until last year, who passed away a year this month.

She said she had found peace knowing her grandson was in a better place.

Savita’s day starts around midday on Wednesdays and after a good payload hitched on her buggy, the day ends with cash-in and a walk back home.
