The Beautiful Game Lives in Labasa and Rewa

AS the IDC kicks off Tuesday, Fiji’s finest promise style and substance, while others stumble into scandal, doubt, and fading glory.

For football at its purest, look no further than Labasa and Rewa.

These districts have mastered possession-based play, where passing and control are not just tactics but declarations of dominance.

While others still wrestle with the basics, Labasa and Rewa have elevated fundamentals into artistry.

The 2025 Fiji FACT and Battle of the Giants champions, along with the 2025 National Football League winners, don’t just play to win.

They mesmerize with rhythm, flair, and imagination.

Expect more of the same this IDC: confidence, precision, and delicate touches carving open even the tightest defences.

Labasa coach Alvin Chand and Rewa’s player-coach Tevita Waranaivalu lead formidable squads.

Unlike rivals scrambling for unsettled guest players, these two remain faithful to the formula that has made them the benchmark of Fijian football.

Elsewhere, the picture darkens.

Ba

Ba, returning home for a major tournament after nearly a decade, will christen its new stadium under the glare of ‘Signature Ba’ lights.

A raucous crowd may lift them, but form suggests their flame will flicker before the finals.

Lautoka

Lautoka’s reliance on outsiders makes them equally brittle.

With newcomers and coach Ravinesh Kumar among them, the Blues may struggle for cohesion.

Then again, they have often found ways to sneak into the semifinals.

Anything beyond that will depend on their own making.

Nadi

Nadi, once the feared “Green Machine,” enter the IDC stripped of identity and shrouded in scandal.

Commentator Raymond Stoddart’s explosive claim that officials tried to fix their last two league matches has only deepened their disrepute.

Instead of revival, Nadi arrive as the tournament’s biggest disappointment.

Navua

Navua fare no better. By fielding suspended Simione Domini, they admitted to an “honest mistake,” but the damage was done.

Already stained by the “Comet system glitch,” they now carry the stench of complicity.

Suva-Nadroga

Suva and Nadroga will scrap, but history and momentum are not on their side.

For them, it’s one match at a time.

So if it’s true football you seek, don’t gamble.

The beautiful game lives in Labasa and Rewa and that’s where the championship belongs.
