VANCOUVER duo Shahil Khan and Aydin Ali will provide Canadian representation on the USA All Stars squad for next week’s Pacific Cup in New Zealand.
The pair’s impressive form in Canada has prompted the USA coaching staff to look north for reinforcements, strengthening their lineup with two players considered among the best in Canadian Fijian football.
Khan, a seasoned campaigner, returns to the side after representing the Americans at the 2023 and 2024 Pacific Cup tournaments in New Zealand and Fiji respectively.
Last year, the USA All Stars bowed out in the semi-finals, falling 2–0 to NZFFI Manukau All Stars at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Ali, meanwhile, is set for his tournament debut and has been touted as the next major talent to emerge from the Canadian Fijian football scene.
Khan said the Pacific Cup consistently delivers top-tier competition.
“I find the Pacific Cup to be a very competitive tournament. You’re playing against the top Fijian boys from their respective countries, with additions from abroad,” he said.
He believes the Americans are well positioned for a title run this year.
“I think USA has a great chance to win the entire tournament. We’ve had a young squad for the past two years, and a lot of us have now had the time to mature. This is the year where many of us ‘young boys’ will step up. Hopefully it’s enough to secure the trophy.”
Khan added that his personal mindset remains unchanged.
“My approach is the same as always try my hardest and put everything on the line for the win.”
