King of Sevens’ Serevi Signals Election Bid, Promises No Pay

RUGBY Sevens Hall of Famer Waisale Serevi is contemplating contesting the 2026 Fijian Elections.

The maestro of sevens rugby says he is ready to serve the people of Fiji, declaring that if elected, he would become the only politician in Fiji  and perhaps the world who chooses not to take a salary.

“I will not join any party. I will contest as an independent and get votes,” he quipped with a smile.

“I will be the first minister in Fiji and the world not to get paid. For me, it’s not about money. It’s about the people you lead.”

Serevi, revered globally as the ‘King of Sevens’, said his decision stems from a long-held desire to give back to the nation that shaped his career and identity.

The 55-year-old added that leadership should be rooted in community service, not personal gain.

He believes his global experience, discipline from elite sport, and passion for youth development could translate into meaningful national impact.

“I want to help create opportunities, especially for our young people, everyone deserves a chance.”

Serevi acknowledged that contesting as an independent candidate will not be challenging, adding he will get votes out of trust, respect, and connection with everyday Fijians.

As anticipation builds for the 2026 elections, Serevi’s possible candidacy has already sparked conversations across the country not only about politics, but about leadership, sacrifice, and what it truly means to serve.
