Matanisiga Takes SportOne-Viti World of Sports Player of the Year Honours

GABRIELE Matanisiga’s trophy cabinet continues to expand and so does his influence on Fiji football.

The Rewa defender has been crowned SportOne-Viti World of Sports Player of the Year following a commanding series of performances throughout the 2025 season, cementing his reputation as one of the most dependable figures in the domestic game.

The 30-year-old was a cornerstone of a dominant Rewa side that captured four major trophies this year, the Champion Series, Extra Premier League, Inter-District Championship, and the Pacific Cup, a haul that underlined the club’s authority in local football.

Rewa also finished runners-up in both the Fiji FACT and the Battle of the Giants, narrowly missing a clean sweep in what was already an exceptional campaign.

Renowned for his composure, intelligence, and versatility, Matanisiga combines disciplined defensive work with incisive attacking runs, often creating or finishing chances with assured timing.

One of the defining moments of his season came during the Pacific Cup, when his spectacular overhead kick lit up the tournament. The goal was widely praised for its technique and audacity and is already being spoken of as a modern classic in local football.

Off the field, Matanisiga also made history by becoming the first Fijian footballer to sign a professional contract with Bula FC, the country’s flagship club set to compete in the OFC Pro League, which debuts in 2026.

Fiji football commentator Riten Gosai described Matanisiga as indispensable to Rewa’s success.

“He logs serious minutes and is one of the few players you expect to see complete the full 90 week after week,” Gosai said. “He’s a stalwart in defence.”

Gosai added that Matanisiga’s willingness to push forward sets him apart.

“He’s never hesitant to enter the opposition box, and he knows his way to goal. He showed that clearly during the Pacific Cup,” he said.

“Consistency has been Rewa’s strength over the past few years, and Matanisiga has been the kingpin.”

Meanwhile, Shahil Khan was named SportOne-Viti World of Sports Player of the Year (Vancouver) for the second consecutive year, having first claimed the award in 2024.

The 22-year-old midfielder, based in Vancouver, enjoyed his most complete season to date and played a pivotal role in Nadi FC’s Battle of the Giants triumph.

Khan also featured for the USA All Stars in the Pacific Cup, further enhancing his reputation as one of Fiji football’s most promising talents.

The SportOne-Viti World of Sports Player of the Year recipients were selected by a panel of experts comprising coaches, administrators, and journalists.
