Bula FC win, Auvray eyes consistency over scoreline

WITH every challenge comes a chance to build better and stronger.

Bula FC secured their first OFC Professional League victory with a 1–0 win over Solomon Kings, but head coach Stéphane Auvray was quick to shift focus away from the result and toward the bigger picture consistency, adaptability, and long-term growth.

While the milestone win was welcome, Auvray stressed that the scoreline mattered far less than the process behind it.

“The score, so far, is not for me. It’s not important,” he told OFC Media. “It is for the players and the fans.”

The Frenchman reiterated his vision of developing a cohesive, well-rounded team capable of imposing itself regardless of the opponent a level he admits has yet to fully materialise.

Despite the victory, Bula FC were made to look ordinary for long periods, spending much of the contest on the back foot as Solomon Kings dictated territory and possession.

The Fijian side relied heavily on a disciplined defensive structure, absorbing sustained pressure while waiting for counter-attacking opportunities.

That resilience paid off in the 43rd minute.

Setareki Hughes found space and released Nabil Begg, whose initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Phillip Mango.

Begg reacted quickest to the rebound, calmly slotting home his second goal of the campaign.

Auvray acknowledged that Solomon Kings’ style forced his team to adjust shape on the fly, underlining the importance of adaptability and in-game progression.

Three matches into their professional journey, this marked the first time Bula FA were required to absorb pressure rather than play their preferred open, brisk brand of football.

In their OFC Professional League debut against Vanuatu United, a 2–2 draw, Bula FC enjoyed extended spells of possession.

They also matched Auckland FC tactically and technically in a narrow 1–0 defeat, underlining their potential when able to play on their own terms.

This win is not the product of a flawless performance.

Rather, it is evidence of a team learning, adjusting, and taking small but decisive steps toward long-term success.
