Argentina sevens head coach Santiago Gomez Cora says facing Fiji men’s sevens team always brings the best out of his players, following their hard-fought 17–14 win.
Cora said Fiji has been one of the benchmark teams in rugby sevens for decades, and his players know they must give everything when facing them.
“Fiji is a great team and has been for a good two decades. When we play them, our players give their all,” he said.
He added that if Argentina does not perform at its best, Fiji will take advantage.
“If we don’t give everything, Fiji will win it, and that’s not what any coach or player wants.”
When asked whether BC Place has become a lucky venue for Argentina or if teamwork is the key, Cora said their success comes down to executing a tactical game plan.
“To beat Fiji we need to raise our game. If we don’t, then we lose,” he said.
Cora acknowledged that Argentina has also suffered defeats to Fiji in the past.
“We have lost to Fiji many times because they played well. The team that makes fewer mistakes usually wins. But you can never underestimate Fiji,” he said.
