FOR Trina Davis, football is family and family is everything.
The Fiji Kula women’s footballer says having her loved ones in the stands gives her a sense of comfort every time she steps onto the field.
“My family always travel to support me. My mum couldn’t come this time, but my dad and sister are here,” she said.
Her grandmother, uncles and cousins have also made the effort to attend her matches, and Davis admits that unwavering support pushes her to give nothing less than her all whenever she represents Fiji.
With her personal “tag team” cheering from the stadium concourse, Davis carries more than just the hopes of a nation, she carries her family’s pride with every run, tackle and goal.
“My grandmother (nani), uncles and cousins always come support me during my games. They travel all the way from Saweni, Lautoka to Ba. It feels great to have them cheer on me and the team,” said Davis.
Originally from Seattle, Washington in the United States, Davis has risen through Fiji’s age-group ranks to earn her place in the senior squad.
The team is currently competing in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Oceania Qualifiers in Ba, Fiji.
She said she is relishing her time with the squad and the bond she shares with her teammates.
“I have been in the national team since 2018. I’ve played with this group of girls many times, so we’re very comfortable playing with each other.”
Davis also spoke highly of the team’s new coach, Nicola Demaine.
“I love our new coach, she is amazing. Super supportive, and the way she coaches is very encouraging. She treats us with respect, so I really enjoy being coached by her,” Davis added.
Davis scored the opening goal in Fiji’s dominant 5-0 victory over New Caledonia, while their match against Papua New Guinea was rained out yesterday.
