WEARING a big smile, Shelly Kumar works tirelessly behind the scenes at the Vancouver Sevens.
Kumar’s love for rugby sevens has seen her volunteer at the event since the inaugural tournament in 2016.
“I just love rugby, people and community work,” she said, adding that it is always enjoyable being around people who share the same passion and enthusiasm.
Kumar, who is originally from Ba, Fiji, has always been involved in sports and admits she is a sports fanatic.
Being part of the volunteer team at the annual HSBC SVNS event in Vancouver has allowed her to remain connected to the sport she loves while meeting fans from around the world.
She says the atmosphere during weekend tournament is something special, with supporters turning up in colourful costumes and cheering loudly for their teams.
“For me it’s not really work. It’s something I enjoy doing because you get to meet so many people and feel the energy of the crowd,” Kumar said.
While most experiences have been positive, she admits that occasionally she encounters people who are less appreciative of the guidance and support volunteers provide.
Kumar said she had considered skipping this year’s Vancouver Sevens following the passing of her mother last month. However, she decided to continue volunteering in her memory.
“My mum was my biggest inspiration and friend. She used to join me during the event, so it was only fitting that I do it for her,” Kumar said.
One of the highlights for Kumar this year was being chosen as the medal bearer during the women’s awards ceremony.
“It is volunteer work but you still feel the appreciation, and I feel lucky to have been chosen as a medal bearer,” she said with a smile.
Kumar encourages people to follow their hearts and do things they truly enjoy.
“Be yourself, enjoy, live life and spread love.”
She added that seeing Fiji play on the world stage in Vancouver always fills her with pride and motivates her to keep giving her time to help make the tournament a success.
