Kamendra Naidu’s passion for football commentary is carving out a unique space in the game, captivating fans with what he proudly calls his “simple English” approach.
Hailing from Labasa, Naidu began his journey as the “Voice of Vanualevu,” calling matches at local community grounds.
His natural flair behind the microphone quickly set him apart, earning him recognition among grassroots football followers.
That growing popularity soon opened bigger doors.
Naidu’s voice reached a wider audience during the TISI Sangam Centennial Tournament in Nadi, where he further cemented his reputation and built a strong following beyond Fiji’s shores.
“I may not be a professional commentator, but then who is? It’s just putting words together, simple ones that fans can relate to as the action unfolds,” Naidu said.
Despite his rising recognition, he remains grounded.
Away from the microphone, Naidu works full-time as an assistant court officer at the High Court in Labasa, balancing his passion for football with everyday responsibilities.
He believes that as long as fans experience the thrill of live action, they will continue to tune in.
“It’s about connection. When people understand you, they stay,” he said.
TISI Sangam coverage expands his reach
Reflecting on his journey, Naidu said his involvement in the TISI Sangam tournament began modestly.
After covering a handful of matches last year, his work caught the attention of overseas teams, who approached him to provide live coverage for this year’s tournament.
“I was known as the Voice of Vanualevu through Facebook commentary. I also do a Sports Talkback Show and a Morning Show. I guess that’s what helped people follow me,” he said.
“I’m just being myself—keeping it simple, using everyday conversation that engages people.”
More passion than profit
While Naidu does receive payment for his work, he is clear that it is not about making money.
“I charge a rate that teams and businesses can afford. This is not a get-rich scheme,” he said.
For him, it’s about honest work and integrity.
“I earn through my job. I choose not to steal or do anything against the law. I do what I do to make an honest living and feed my family.”
Naidu added that his jargon-free style is rooted in simplicity , proving that sometimes the most powerful commentary is the kind everyone understands.
