From Fiji roots to FIFA’s grand stage

IT will be some time before Manav Vikash Chand fully understands the magnitude of the FIFA World Cup.

The 11-year-old not only walked alongside some of the best players in the world, but also stepped onto the field and stood during the national anthem in front of a sold-out crowd at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

Chand was among the player escorts for Friday’s match between New Zealand and Belgium.

Nervous yet excited for an opportunity of a lifetime to be on football’s biggest stage, Chand described the experience as unforgettable.

“On game day, I felt a little nervous, but also really excited. Walking through the tunnel was amazing.

“When I heard all the fans cheering and saw the bright lights, it felt like I was in a dream. Then I got to stand beside one of the world’s best soccer players before the game started. It was a moment I will remember forever.”

Chand, whose parents are originally from Fiji, said while the country has yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, his family was proud to see a Canadian-born youngster with Fijian roots step onto football’s grandest stage.

“I’m really proud to be an Indo-Fijian boy. It meant so much to represent my family, my culture, and my community on such a big stage. If I am the first Indo-Fijian boy to be a FIFA World Cup player escort, that makes this experience even more special,” said Chand.

Chand was selected through Quaker Canada Scores program to the 2026 FIFA World Cup players escorts team.

“I’m happy Quaker Canada Scores for making this opportunity possible. Without them, I would never have had this unforgettable experience. They helped make one of my biggest dreams come true.”

Though Fiji has never made a World Cup appearance, moments like these inspire hope and dreams for young footballers back home.

Chand said the experience taught him to always believe in himself, work hard, and never give up. I hope my story inspires other kids to dream big because you never know where your dreams might take you.

For Chand and his family, Friday was more than just attending a match it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a proud moment that connected football, family, and heritage.
