Roadside water tap a blessing for motorists at Taidamu Hill

MOTORIST whose vehicles overheat while travelling along Taidamu Hill in Lautoka can now access running water conveniently by the roadside, thanks to a thoughtful initiative by a long-time resident.

Gafoor Samat, who has lived in the area for more than 24 years, installed the tap after years of seeing stranded drivers struggle to find water.

He said motorists would often walk to his home seeking help when their vehicles overheated due to radiator pressure.

“I always had people coming to the house asking for water to help with overheating issues,” he said.

“The need was clear. When I was facing water problems myself, people supported me through a fundraiser, which helped me install a borehole to ease my situation.”

Inspired by that support, Gafoor decided to give back to the community by extending a pipe up to the roadside, allowing motorists to access water easily at any time.

“I used to get wake-up calls in the middle of the night from people needing water, and I never refused,” he said.

Now, with the tap in place, those late-night disruptions have eased, while motorists can independently access water whenever needed.

Gafoor added that the initiative is not limited to vehicle emergencies anyone in need of drinking water is welcome to use it.

“Water is God’s gift, a blessing. Those who need it can come and help themselves,” he said.

His simple act of kindness is already making a difference, turning a once-common inconvenience for motorists into a moment of relief and a reminder of the power of community spirit.
