Get focused says legend Serevi

Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi: FB picFIJIAN rugby legend Waisale Serevi put out a strong message for rugby players and coaches from atop the Sigatoka Sand Dunes on Christmas Day.

The great one who once ran the length of the field with dazzling footwork and speed, knee jerked uphill as he was cheered on by his daughter, Fijiana 15s player Asinate Serevi.

At one point, she called out on her brother Waisale Serevi Jnr, to help their father, who with age was losing his footing to reach the pinnacle.

“It was tiring, I’m glad we made it,” he said, while emphasizing the need to stay focused.”

“It’s Christmas Day in Fiji, Fiji is first for everything, wherever you are in Fiji, with family or without one, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.”

Need to be focused

Serevi said rugby players and coaches need to be focused as he made a special mention of Fiji sevens head coach Ben Gollings and Viliame Satala.

“Get focused for the New Year,” he said.

“In the next few days, this year will be over. Everything is done and over with.We have learnt a lot of things in the last few months, we need to start strong.

“Make sure to set your goals now, we have an important 8 months, not in August.”

Serevi’s tilt was towards the 2024 Paris Olympics in August, calling on the players and coaching staff to work hard in achieving the task ahead.

“What you want to do, start now, begins with the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.”

Flying Fijians Praise

Serevi said he was impressed with the Flying Fijians season.

“We beat England, Wallabies 22-15, a first in 69 years, and Georgia 17-15 at the Rugby World Cup.

“Congratulation, we are proud of you all.”

Serevi said while coach Simon Raiwalui has parted ways, he did an excellent job, and praised captain Waisea Nayacalevu’s leadership.

Overseas based players

Serevi urged the overseas based players to alway keep the door open so their younger brothers and sisters can join their clubs in the future.

“Wherever you are playing make sure to keep the door open for your brothers and sisters,” Serevi said.

“So one day they come and play in the club.

“Those that play in England, Japan and France, remember you representing your families, club, province and the country.”
