Love for Fiji can’t be beat

CANADIAN Fijians love for their former country just can’t be beat.

Even for those who have lived in Canada for decades, true patriot love is for Fiji.

And come HSBC SVNS Canada Sevens, the diehards Sportsone talked to say there’s no trade-off for loyalty when it comes to Fiji men’s and women’s teams.

“We are Fijians first, it’s no exaggeration,” said Ronald Singh.

“Our fans and flags will be from bleachers to rafters and for the world to see.

“Having lived in Canada for over 4 decades, Fiji is home where the heart is.”

The Vancouverite said he can’t help but place Canada behind his country of birth every Canada Sevens.

“Crazy? Not. It’s all about love,” Singh said.

“Canada is the best place on Earth, but Fiji is where the heart is.”

Singh said there was a time when Fiji was best known for its sun, sand and sea, but mention Fiji now and hear all about the sevens rugby.

“Fijians are known in Canada and the world for sevens rugby, the sport that has given us a sporting identity and pride,” he said.

“Fiji won back-to-back Olympic gold, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Rugby World Cup, 1997,2005, 2022, and HSBC Sevens series in 2005–06, and 2018–19.

“For a country with a population of less than a million, it’s a remarkable achievement.”

Singh said that Canada needn’t get upset as he wholeheartedly supported Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Hockey Championship Game in Boston.

“There’s no substitute when it comes to Hockey, Canada is the team, we beat the USA 3-2 in overtime to win the championship.

“Cut me some slack, join me by supporting Fiji during the Canada Sevens.

“You’ll be glad you did.”
