IT takes a village to raise a child, so the proverb goes.
But for Shahil Khan, his family is everything and when it comes to football, his father is the role model.
The 21-year-old Fijian football’s rising star has bigger dreams and wants to do better in the sport than his father.
His father Mohammed Fareed Khan was a fierce defender, unlike Shahil who plays more of a forward position.
Shahil said he had heard about his father’s contribution to the sport during his prime playing days.
“I heard stories about him in his prime time, it gives me something to look forward to and surpass him,” said Shahil.
He was in the USA All-Stars Pacific Cup team for the 2023-2024 Pacific Community Cup competitions in New Zealand and Fiji.
Last weekend he was named the Player of the Battle of the Giants, and with a strong performance he is likely to make the 2025 USA team.
Keen on representing Nadi and Fiji
Shahil, whose roots go back to Nadi, Fiji says he has his options open to represent the district.
“If I’m approached by Nadi FC, I would go represent my roots.
“It would be an honour to play for Nadi as it’s my father’s roots. A lot of my family is in Nadi so to represent them would be very special.”
Shahil said representing Fiji is also on the bucket list.
“If I play well, and get selected it will be like living my dream of representing the Fiji team.”
BOG win, special
The tournament win was a first for Shahil, who played alongside great players to victory.
He said winning the BOG meant everything to him.
“I’m honoured to represent my hometown in Fiji, Nadi FC., it is always special.”
“It’s even more special as this is my first ever BOG and we could win as a team.
“Our boys battled hard, sweat, and tears.”
Shahil praised the management and sponsors, adding without them, ‘none of this would have been possible’.
“Hats off to all.”
“A big thanks to all my supporters, they are the reason I have so much passion for the game. Their love is my fuel.”
