Adrakar or go bust

HEARD of the cliché, “Adrakar or go bust?”

If you didn’t, you do now.

Neil Adrakar has turned the Fiji All Stars into a competitive force at the Nations Cup, with the team continuing to punch above its weight under his guidance.

Ever since taking over the coaching role, Adrakar has transformed the squad into a disciplined and confident outfit capable of matching some of the tournament’s strongest teams.

In his debut year, he selected players he believed were genuine footballers who could blend well with the guest players and proudly represent Fiji.

As a former All Stars footballer himself, Adrakar’s message has been clear from the beginning represent a new generation while honouring the pioneers who paved the way.

It is a path he has encouraged the younger players to embrace and give their all, game in and game out.

This year’s campaign was another example of his growing reputation as a master motivator, leading Fiji to the semifinals where their impressive run ended with a 2-0 loss to Japan.

It was not the result he wanted, but Adrakar was satisfied with the grit and character shown throughout the tournament.

Fiji beat Canada, edged Iran in a dramatic shootout, and produced some of the most entertaining football of the competition.

Adrakar’s calm leadership, tactical awareness, and ability to unite experienced campaigners with emerging talent have become trademarks of the team’s success.

Patrick Junior, who etched himself into football stardom, made his intentions known after witnessing Fiji turn heads at the Nations Cup, saying it made perfect sense to retain the coaching staff and the core of the squad for the greater good of football.

“They have a good core of players, they need to stay together,” he said.

“The players need to play in higher level leagues, Premier or Vancouver Metro Soccer League, to be able to compete with elite players in the Nations Cup.”

It may not be far-fetched to say the team can not only reach a final one day, but also win its first Nations Cup title.

That belief, however, must also come from the head honchos belief in the coach, the mentor, and the vision he brings.

For many supporters, the saying now fits perfectly.

Adrakar or go bust.
