Fiji All Stars’ fine Nations Cup run came to an end following a 2-0 semifinal loss to defending champions Japan in Richmond, British Columbia.
Fiji matched the tournament favourites throughout a spirited first half, producing some impressive attacking moves and creating several promising opportunities.
The side came close to breaking the deadlock on a number of occasions, but the disciplined Japanese defence stood firm under pressure.
After the teams went into the halftime break scoreless, Japan returned with greater intensity and control in the second spell.
Their persistence paid off with two well-worked goals that secured their place in the final against Africa.
Coach Neil Adrakar praised the players’ effort, saying the lack of recovery time between matches proved decisive in the end.
“We played really well,” he said.
“It was just the tired legs that got to us. We had our chances and they finished theirs. They got their second goal when we pushed everyone up trying to equalise.”
Despite the defeat, Fiji can hold their heads high after an inspiring campaign that saw them reach the semifinals for only the third time in tournament history.
The team earned praise for its determination and attacking flair throughout the competition, including a dramatic shootout victory over Iran to secure a place in the final four.
Players, officials and supporters were proud of the squad’s efforts, with the campaign viewed as another important step forward for Fiji football on the international amateur stage.
