THE New Zealand Nadi Legends have successfully defended the late Jo Lutumailagi Memorial Cup after a thrilling contest in Nadi yesterday.
The team, made up of former Nadi district representatives and close friends, continues to participate in the annual fixture as a mark of respect and honour for the former Nadi coach Jo Lutumailagi, who passed away in 2023.
Led by Josefa Masilagi, who once played under Lutumailagi, the New Zealand side edged Nadi Legends 6-5 in a closely fought encounter.
Masilagi said the occasion goes far beyond the result, stressing that the game is not solely about winning but about honouring a man who played a significant role in shaping football in Nadi through his coaching and ability to identify emerging talent.
“Jo was more than a coach. He was someone who helped shape district football and guided many players during his time with Nadi,” Masilagi said.
Former Nadi district footballer Peter Nizamud Dean said the annual memorial match continues to strengthen the bond between Nadi Legends in New Zealand and Fiji, united by their shared passion for football and their respect for Lutumailagi’s legacy.
“The third year of this cup match is something we are immensely proud of,” he said.
Dean said as hosts they’re grateful for the contribution of the New Zealand team, former Nadi football legends, donors, supporters, and the Lutumailagi family for making this special occasion possible.
“Our brotherhood remains strong as we continue to cherish the memories and good times together.
“We are humbled.”
