Overgrown Nadi field need urgent attention

TWO full-size football and rugby fields near King Charles Park are in urgent need of mowing if they are to be considered for sporting events.

The old Nadi College grounds once a breeding ground for some of the district’s finest footballers, have been left overgrown with weeds, rendering them unusable.

The fields now stand neglected, with knee-high grass and scrub taking over what was once one of Nadi’s most valued sporting venues.

Unless the Nadi Town Council or a private entity steps in to take responsibility, their condition is expected to worsen.

At some level, there has been a clear lapse in maintaining a key community asset.

Local football enthusiast Mohammed Yasin said the grounds were once a hub for activity but have since been left idle.

“Full-size fields with goalposts intact, all it needs is proper mowing to make them playable again,” Yasin said.

“It is just a few minutes away from King Charles Park”.

With the upcoming Sangam World Cup in Nadi, he believes the fields present an ideal opportunity to host matches.

Yasin noted that more than 90 teams from Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States are expected to participate, and the additional grounds would help ease pressure on existing venues.

He added that despite the neglect, the fields still retain basic infrastructure and could be restored quickly with minimal effort.

“It doesn’t take much to bring it back just proper mowing and maintenance,” he said.

Yasin believes reviving the fields would not only support the Sangam World Cup but also benefit the wider community by restoring a once-thriving space for football and rugby development.
